At Martial Arts Spirit, we know how important family is.
All our students, regardless of age, gender, culture, or religion also join our family, united in experiencing all the benefits that martial arts has to offer. We assist, guide, nurture and encourage our students in a safe environment, to overcome and obstacle that is set in front of them and helping them to be confident, humble and respectful leaders of our society.
Our instructors look at each student as an individual to assess the individual challenges they may face. Our mission at Martial Arts Spirit is to provide constant and never-ending personal growth and improvement to our members through the values of Taekwondo.
From humble origins in 2006 in a small community centre in Southwest Sydney, Martial Arts Spirit has grown into 7 locations across Sydney, providing our programs in your local community.
The MAS Founders comes from a diverse background, bringing different skills and ideas to the table but our goals is the same: To provide an environment of constant and never-ending personal growth and improvement to our members through the values of Martial Arts.
Master Terrence Fernandez is the Founder and Master Instructor of Martial Arts Spirit. Introduced to the sport of Taekwondo at the young age of six, Master Terrence grew a love for the sport and excelled, achieving his Black Belt at the age of ten, one of the youngest black belts. Martial Arts Spirit was founded by Master Terrence to give back to the local community and as a safe space free from bullying, helping students grow in confidence and discipline. This philosophy has still remained the same as Martial Arts Spirit has grown, with Master Terrence steering and mentoring our team.
Master Terrence has represented Australia in Taekwondo internationally from the age of 15 in the Junior World Championships in 2004 and has a long list of medals and accolades. Master Terrence was also a part of the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Taekwondo Olympic Shadow team.
Founded in 2006, Martial Arts Spirit Australia has grown from a single community centre program into a world-recognised martial arts organisation, now operating 7 locations across New South Wales.
Over the past 20 years, MAS has proudly taught thousands of students, producing:
MAS has consistently ranked #1 in NSW across many competitions and state championships, reflecting the high standard of coaching, athlete development, and training culture within the organisation.
Martial Arts Spirit gained national recognition through appearances on Sunrise and Channel 7, showcasing our innovative Mini Rangers preschool program. Our preschool and school-based programs have since been delivered across numerous schools and preschools throughout NSW, introducing martial arts as a powerful tool for early childhood development.
Our coaching team is truly world class, with many coaches conducting seminars globally and several holding World Champion status, ensuring students receive elite-level instruction in a supportive and positive environment.
The MAS Head Instructor team expanded with the addition of Taejoon Moon and Vince Messina that also operate their own MAS schools, whose contributions have helped elevate Martial Arts Spirit into a globally respected school known for developing leaders, role models, and champions of society. Their experience as students and then as instructors have helped shape our curriculums over the generations to increase and maintain engagement from students whilst having fun. Their experience training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has also allowed MAS to expand into offering other martial arts not just Taekwondo.
More importantly than medals or rankings, Martial Arts Spirit has changed thousands of lives — helping students build confidence, form lifelong friendships, develop discipline, and learn the skills to protect themselves and others.
Today, Martial Arts Spirit Australia stands for more than just martial arts.
We stand for growth, confidence, community, and excellence — on and off the mat.
Terrence Travis & Tristan Fernandez
Martial Arts Spirit was founded by brothers Terrence Travis and Tristan Fernandez, lifelong martial artists whose journey began in early childhood.
Terrence and Travis both began training in Taekwondo at the age of 6, while the youngest brother, TJ (Tristan), started even earlier at just 4 years old. From a young age, martial arts became a defining part of their lives, shaping their discipline, character, and vision for the future.
In 2006, at only 16 years of age, Terrence opened the first Martial Arts Spirit classes at Green Valley Community Centre, while still attending school and training as an elite athlete representing Australia with aspirations of competing at the Olympic Games. His motivation for opening MAS was deeply personal.
Growing up shy and lacking confidence, Terrence struggled to make friends during primary school. Martial arts provided an environment where he could improve at his own pace — without pressure, comparison, or fear of making mistakes. Through Taekwondo, he developed confidence, resilience, discipline, and self-belief, along with the skills to defend himself against bullying during his high school years.
This life-changing experience became the foundation of Martial Arts Spirit —
to create a safe, inclusive environment where people of all ages can grow as individuals, gain confidence, build friendships, and learn practical self-defence skills.
The first students of MAS were Terrence’s own brothers, Travis and TJ, and together the three brothers have since built one of Australia’s most respected martial arts organisations. All three have expanded their expertise beyond Taekwondo, studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Boxing, and Weapons, and have been members of multiple Australian National Teams.
Their achievements include:
International medals and Commonwealth Gold Medals
Representation of Australia at elite international benchmark competitions
Selection of Terrence for the Beijing and London Olympic shadow teams
Beyond competition, Terrence has coached numerous Australian representatives, as well as national representatives from other countries, guiding athletes at the highest international and world-class levels.
Travis Fernandez brings an added level of professionalism to the organisation, having earned a university scholarship through Taekwondo and studying Law, reinforcing the values of discipline, leadership, and excellence that define MAS.
Tristan Fernandez is now one of the Lead Coaches of the MAS Competition Team, coaching athletes at state, national, and international levels, and playing a key role in developing the next generation of champions.
Highly respected within the martial arts community, the Fernandez brothers are also the founders of Pantheon, a world-class martial arts equipment brand. Their innovative Taekwondo armour, designed from deep technical knowledge of the sport, is worn by elite athletes worldwide and reflects their contribution to advancing the sport.
They are also the creators of the Sydney Taekwondo Festival, now one of the largest Taekwondo competitions in Australia, further cementing their impact on the martial arts community both nationally and internationally.

My life has changed since I started Jiu-Jitsu, I learned to respect people more, control my impulses and have more confidence in myself. I believe that Jiu-Jitsu can help you feel this way too, it’s like a journey of self-knowledge. Brazilian jiu jitsu is like a game of chess, you always have to change the pieces to better adapt to the game.

I started Taekwondo when I was just 4 years old, following in my brother’s footsteps. I quickly fell in love with the environment and how included and supported I felt by my coaches and friends. Growing up in the martial arts community taught me so many life skills, not just kicks and patterns. Discipline and perseverance are huge values I try to pass on to my students every class, I love helping students build confidence, resilience, and feel like they truly belong.
